Harriet S. (Cook) Benda Lansing Age 84, died Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Grandhaven Living Center in Lansing.

Harriet was born in Lenawee County, MI, October 9, 1926 to Leo and Pearl Brockway.

As a teenager, she came to Lansing and graduated from Sexton High School. She worked in childcare and attended Business School.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband James Cook in 1977, husband Emil Benda in 2006, brothers; Edward Brockway (MIA Korean War) and Cleo Brockway, sister Vivian George, and grandsons Tony Pekar and Alex Pekar.

Harriet was a loving mother who raised her children with strong moral values. By example she taught them to be honest, hard working and independent. She offered advice when asked, but preferred not to interfere and allowed her children to learn by their mistakes. She was a lifetime member of the Lansing Motorcycle Club, an activity she enjoyed with her husband Jim Cook. She was primarily a homemaker and helped with the farm as the kids were growing. When her youngest was in high school, she began working at Montgomery Wards. After the children were grown she worked as an account clerk for the Department of Education with the State of Michigan, retiring in 1988.

She is survived by her six children raised with James, step-daughter Janette (David) Pekar, step-son James (Richard Cinanni) Cook, sons; Frank (Karen) Cook and Theodore (Nancy) Cook, daughters; Marjorie (Joe) Rausch and Karin (Kevin) Carver, twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by Emil's children; Carolyn (Leroy) Anderson, Mark Benda, Tim Benda and Ruth Hughes.

Surviving sisters are Nita Brockway, Myrna Reynolds and Ada (Joe) Putnum, brother Paul Brockway and many nieces and nephews. Harriet will be dearly missed by her family.

We would like to thank Hospice of Lansing and Grandhaven Living Center for their excellent and compassionate care of our mother at the end of her life.

A Memorial Service will be held, Saturday, August 6, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at Tiffany Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Geiger officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends Friday, August 5, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 6, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
