As a young man he worked at two or three different jobs in Raywood and Devers area but went to work for the old Liberty Supply Company in 1948. He remained with that company for many years and later for the Liberty Implement Company, when the John Deere dealership was purchased by the Seaburg family. He served for many years as the Parts Department Manager and was well known for his vast knowledge of tractor and equipment parts. He retired from Liberty Implement in April 1982. During the time of the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Army, entering service in February 1951. Assigned to the 28th General Hospital Detachment in 1952, Corporal Ladd was stationed in France at Croix-Chapeau Army Hospital and Military Depot. He was honorably discharged in the spring of 1953 and resumed his job at Liberty Supply.
Hal was ordained as a Deacon on October 22, 1961 at the age of 31 and served under ten different pastors until his retirement as a deacon in 2010. He served on the Hardin School Board from 1971 to 1977, variously holding the offices of president, vice president and secretary. He was also devoted to the Hull-Daisetta Alumni Association, having served as president and vice president of the Golden Oldies and as a trustee of the Nelson Stovall Scholarship Fund.
