Born Sept. 7, 1924, in Butler, he was a son of Michael and Agnes Sweeney Benninger.
He served in the Merchant Marine Service during World War II. He retired in 1983 from the combustion maintenance department at Armco-Butler Works after nearly 44 years.
Mr. Benninger enjoyed working in his garden. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing at his camp, "Lady Luck," in Kane.
He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church; and as a boy, he attended St. Paul School.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Nulph Benninger; two sons, William L. Jr. and Robert J. Benninger; two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Diane) Dimit and Pennie Bestwick; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Carla Brantner; two brothers, Russell and Paul Benninger; and a sister, Mrs. Victor (Lorene) Scott. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
His first wife, Margaret A. Burtner Benninger, died March 14, 1998. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Billie Ann Benninger; a granddaughter, Katie Bestwick; and a brother, Donald Benninger.
BENNINGER - Friends of William L. "Bill" Benninger, who died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, will be received from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St. His grandsons will serve as his pallbearers. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery.
The St. Paul Guild and Christian Mothers will recite the rosary at 9:40 a.m. Friday at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross, 312 Mercer St., Butler, PA 16001; or to the Salvation Army, 313 W. Cunningham St., Butler, PA 16001.
