Helen M. Rakestraw
Helen M. Rakestraw, 98, died Feb. 11, 2005. She was a resident at the Prospect Park Living Center in Estes Park. She was born on Nov.15, 1906, at her grandfather’s farm south of Bladen, Neb., to Oscar Lindgren and Carrie (Cather) Lindgren. Helen graduated from Bladen High School and attended Hastings College in Hastings, Neb. She married Byron A. Rakestraw in Bladen on June 12, 1929. She and her husband lived in Hastings the majority of their lives. They had a retirement home in Sun City, Ariz. for 18 years and also had a home at Johnson Lake near Lexington, Neb. After her husband’s illness in 1993 they moved to Loveland, and lived at the Good Samaritan Complex. After an injury in 2002, she moved to Estes Park. Helen spent her life enjoying her family. She worked at the USO during World War II, she was involved with First Presbyterian Church in Hastings. She enjoyed square dancing, golf, tennis, water skiing, and bridge. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister and her husband. She is survived by her daughter Jacqueline Fricke of Omaha, Neb.; her son Sherrill Rakestraw of Estes Park; grandchildren Jean Guffey of Las Vegas, Nev., Tracey Svevad and Tom Fricke of Omaha, Launa Leibbrand of Colorado Springs, and Scott Rakestraw of Blair, Neb.; one brother Carol Lindgren of Hastings; and one sister Blanche Nielsen of Cheyenne, Wyo.; eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. A family memorial service and a private family internment will be held at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.
