Dorothy Ruth (Brown) Banks, 93, of Winfield, died July 13, 2014, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. Private family burial will precede the services.

Visitation with the family will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Memorials are to the First Presbyterian Church and Rivercross Hospice. Condolences may be sent to [email protected]

Dorothy was born March 15,1921, in Kansas City, Mo., to John F. and Jean Dorothy (Johnston) Brown. Her family moved soon after to Waurika, Okla., where she attended public schools. Upon graduation from high school, Dorothy moved to Winfield to attend Southwestern College. She lived there with her two aunts, Beth Johnston and Evelyn Johnston. While attending SC, Dorothy was introduced to her future husband, J.J. Banks.

Dorothy and J.J. married at her home in Waurika on Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941, and she subsequently spent her early married life following J.J. from Navy base to Navy base and finding employment in support of the war effort. Upon returning to Winfield after the war, J.J. opened his insurance office, and Dorothy took up housekeeping.

She was a member of Entre Nous, Tuesday at Two Coffee Club and a bridge club. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and was active in her church, serving as the librarian.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, J.J. Banks; and a brother Harry, who died in infancy.

Survivors include her son Jim Banks and wife Robbie, Winfield; daughter Sally Swanson and husband Bobb, Columbia, Mo.; four grandchildren, Jason Banks and wife Nadine, Manhattan, David Banks and wife Polly, Derby, Jessi Whitehurse and husband Joe, Columbia Mo., and Jeff Swanson and wife Christina, Austin, Texas; and nine great-grandchildren.
