I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on the Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.

John J. Sabol, age 77, of East Helena died of a heart attack, Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings.

John James Sabol was born on Nov. 19, 1927, in Warren, Minn., to Michael and Mary Sabol, where he grew up on the family farm with his 13 brothers and sisters.

On June 29, 1948, John married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Fisher in Warren. In 1950 they came to East Helena and made their home. John started work on the Canyon Ferry Dam as an equipment operator. Upon completion of the dam, John and Betty moved to Chester where John worked on Tiber Dam.

In 1955 they returned to East Helena. For the next 30 years, John worked for NPT/Burlington Northern Railroad as a truck driver. He worked hard and met many people that became life-long friends.

John was a Cub Scout, Webelos leader, baseball coach and an East Helena volunteer fireman for 20 years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. Papa loved his family, friends, and neighbors and was willing to help anyone no matter who they were.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Betty; his parents, Michael and Mary Sabol; brothers, Michael Jr., Steve, George, Joseph, Thomas, Ernest; sisters, Margaret and Magdalen; grandchildren, Andrew Mitton and Pam Mitton of East Helena; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He is survived by brothers, Elmer (Janet) of Warren, Minn., and James (Laurie) of Laurel; sisters, Mary Johnson, Julia Nichols and Lucille Kjos of Minnesota; daughter; Evonne (David) Mitton of East Helena; sons, Jerald (Joslyn) Sabol of East Helena and Rod (Abby) Sabol of Swan Valley; grandchildren, Becky (John) Simkins of Helena, Matt Mitton of Bremerton, Wash., Kari Sabol, Beth Sabol, Mason Moranville, Sawyer Moranville of East Helena. Christopher (Angie) Sabol of Helena, Shannon (Steven) Wheeler of Seely Lake; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Elizabeth Simkins of Helena, Tyler Hornby, Kailen Hornby, Alexandra Sabol, Sidney Pronteau, Morgan Sabol of Helena, Breckin "Rudy" Wheeler of Seely Lake; numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and extended family.

Viewing hours will be Monday from noon to 5:30 p.m. at Retz Funeral Home and from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church. A Vigil service will then follow at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be

11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the church. Interment will follow at St. Ann's Cemetery.
