Born in Rubicon Township, first child of William Solon and Eleanor (Potter) Silverthorn. Susanna had a brother, William David, born in 1888 and a second brother, George Dewey, born in 1898 (based on information in 1900 census it is assumed that there was another child that did not survive). The family moved to Au Sable, Iosco County just prior to 1900, and there was a 4th (living) child, Grace May, that was born in 1901.

Being the oldest, Susanna left home and married George Hammond in 1904. They had two sons, George and Earl R, born 1904 & 1910 respectively, both born in Tawas City, Iosco County. Shortly after the birth of their second child, they lived in Flint, Genesee County, most of their lives, listed in the city directories from 1913-1919. Susanna died in 1919, "heart failure due to goiter".
