"Susan Eliza (Peart) Eaton was born at Peart’s Eddy, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania in 1821 to Benjamin Reeves Peart and Susan (Irvin) Peart.

She married John Dixon Eaton in 1836. John was 21 years old when he married 15 year-old Susan in Pine City, Pennsylvania.

John and Susan were the parents of twelve children.
1. William Peart Eaton 1840-1861
2. Benjamin B. Eaton 1841-1862
3. Susan Jane (Eaton) Wolfe 1844-1884
4. Samuel Mateer Eaton 1846-1932
5. Eugene Bentley Eaton 1849-1861
6. Sarah Ann Eaton 1851-1861
7. Eliza M. Eaton 1853-1854
8. Emaline Eaton 1855-1856
9. Albert Eaton 1857-1861
10. Elvira Eaton 1860-1861
11. David Wolfe Eaton 1863-1947
12. John Dixon Eaton, Jr. 1864-1865

Of the 12 children born to John and Susan only two would live to see old age: Samuel, 86, and David, 85.

William (21), Eugene (12), Sarah (10), Emeline (5), Albert (3 ½), and Elvira (1) died from diphtheria within a two week period in May and June of 1861.

Susan, was also stricken with the disease, but she recovered. She was 37 years old at the time.

Eliza died at the age of 1.

Benjamin, joined the Union Army in August of 1862 and died of consumption (tuberculosis) in January of 1863 at the age of 20.

John Dixon Jr. (Susan’s last child) born on Christmas Day 1864 when Susan was 40, only lived for 2 months. Susan Jane died at the age of 40.

By the 1870 census, John and Susan are listed as living in Morgan County, Missouri. The only children shown still living at home are Samuel age 23 (occupation miner) and David age 8. It is said that David rode on the tongue of the wagon and drug his feet in the dirt on the trip from Pennsylvania to Missouri.

By 1870 all of John and Susan’s children except for Susan Jane, Samuel, and David, had died.

Both John and Susan outlived Susan Jane who passed away November 7, 1884. (John passed at the age of 75 on May 1, 1893, and Susan passed at the age of 62 on November 17, 1886 — both in Missouri.)"
