KATHERINE ETHEL BENSON ARNOLD
Mrs. Samuel Coleman Arnold

Ethel Benson Arnold was born Katherine Ethel Benson on Monday, February 18, 1884 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia, to Frank Cook Benson and his wife Lucy Bracken Benson. All of Mrs. Arnold's immediate family are now deceased. Additionally, it appears certain she has no surviving descendants. Corrections and any other information desired.

Ethel Benson was the granddaughter of 19th Century Macon residents Louisa Sewell and Peter James Bracken; and of Catherine Elizabeth Brewer and Richard Aaron Benson, also residing in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.

Ethel's maternal grandfather Peter James Bracken was a railroad engineer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His actions during the Civil War have afforded him a place in history, and can be read online. His son Mr. James Bracken and daughter Miss Loula Bracken, along with their sister Mrs. Frank Cook Benson (Lucy), are known to have visited family and friends in Milledgeville, Georgia, after Lucy Bracken married Frank Cook Benson and before Loula Julia Bracken was married to Mr. Charles Beverly Smith.

The Benson Room at Wesleyan College in Macon is named for Ethel's grandmother, Catherine Elizabeth Brewer Benson. Mrs. Benson, as Catherine Elizabeth Brewer, was the first to receive a diploma from the newly chartered women's college. William Scott, the second husband of Mrs. Arnold's paternal great-grandmother Eliza Jane Jappie Benson Scott, was a major financial supporter of women's education in Georgia.

Richard Aaron Benson was the son of Eliza Jane Jappie and Aaron Benson, and was reared in the household of his stepfather Mr. Scott following his mother's second marriage, which was when Richard Aaron Benson was young. Catherine Elizabeth Brewer's parents were from Massachusetts and had planned to send their daughter to New England to be educated. They heard about the new women's college opening at Macon and decided to educate her there. This was in the 19th Century.
