Joe W. Bailey, 89
NEWARK -- Joe W. Bailey, 89, of Thornville died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at his residence.
He was born March 1, 1914, in High Hill, Muskingum County, to the late George H. and Mary "Florence" Cariens Bailey.
Prior to retirement, he, along with his wife, farmed in Perry County for over 49 years. He was a Thorn Township Trustee in Perry County for 29 years, and was a member of the Thornville Lions Club, where he was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, which is given to a Lion who exemplifies outstanding service and dedication, Farm Bureau Association, Ohio Angus Association, American Angus Association, Ohio Cattlemen's Association, and numerous other agriculture organizations. He graduated from Meigs High School in 1933.
He is survived by his wife, Ora Adams Bailey, whom he married Dec. 19, 1933; one daughter and son-in-law, Viora Sue and Buckley Carlin of Elizabeth, Ky.; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Joe S. and Linda Bailey of Newark; one brother and sister-in-law, George W. and Irene Bailey of Zanesville; seven grandchildren, Viora Beth (Terrence) Gallagher, Marquis Buckley (Gayle) Carlin, Jodi Sue (Glenn) Martin, Heather Anne (Audelle) Cummings, Christopher Michael Bailey, Matthew Stephen Bailey and Bradley Scott Bailey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home, 179 Granville Street, Newark. A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday with Pastor Jeffrey Pound officiating, with burial at Fairmount Cemetery.
