OBITUARIES STATE DATELINE
The Doctor's many interests went far beyond hospitals, said his wife, Mary. "There were many facets to the man," she said. "He was poet, a sculptor, a writer. He wrote about six published poetry books and he wrote about his wife said. He once served as president of the Detroit Zoo Commission. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons Alexander IV and Bruce; a daughter, Josephine Slanaker; four grandchildren, and one brother. The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 9 at the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, 16 Lake Shore Drive, Grosse Pointe Farms. Memorial donations may be made to Karmanos Cancer Institute East . Region, 15111 Thirteen Mile, Warren 48093. Detroit. "He had a real compassion for the aboriginal people," said Lucy Harrison, the agency's executive director. She said Dr. Blain was highly respected by the Ojibwe First Nation Indians on Walpole Island in Ontario. "Alex was very well-read in history, he shared a lot of his Scottish side and there were a lot of similarities," with American Indians, Harrison said. He was on staff at Harper and St. John hospitals in Detroit. Dr. Blain was an early member of the Society for Vascular Surgery and cofounder of the Vascular Surgeons Club. He pioneered vein stripping in Michigan, his By Jeffrey Ghannam Free Press Staff Writer ' A noted surgeon, poet and volunteer. Dr. Alexander Blain of Grosse Pointe will be memorialized July 9. He died June 24 of cancer at his home. He was 79. At the time of his death, he was a consultant to the Veterans Administration in Detroit. He also was a life member of the Academy of Surgery in Detroit, founded by his late father, Alexander Blain Jr., who also founded the Alexander Blain Hospital. The hospital, on East Jefferson in Detroit, merged into what is now Detroit Macomb Riverview Hospital. Dr. Blain was chief surgeon at the Dr. Alexander Blain III." He volunteered with American Indian Health and Family Services of Southeastern Michigan Inc.
