Throughout his career as a jurist, he maintained a reputation for being fair and forceful. He was also quick to understand the facts. A strict constructionist, following Jefferson and Adam Smith, Sharswood disliked governmental interference with personal liberty. He graduated from Penn in 1828. He was a professor at Penn's law school from 1850 to 1868. He served as law school dean beginning in 1852. He later was a trustee of the University from 1872 to 1883.
