Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He was a justice of the District Court of Philadelphia from 1845 to 1868, becoming president judge in 1848. Beginning in 1868 he served on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania until 1882. He was the Court's chief justice from 1879 to 1882. Throughout his career as a jurist, he maintained a reputation for being fair and forceful. He was also quick to understand the facts. A strict constructionist, following Jefferson and Adam Smith, Sharswood disliked governmental interference with personal liberty. He graduated from Penn in 1828. He was a professor at Penn's law school from 1850 to 1868. He served as law school dean beginning in 1852. He later was a trustee of the University from 1872 to 1883.
