Mary Janice Abernathy, 77, of Sheffield, died Sept. 3, 2013. Visitation will be on Friday from noon until 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Sheffield. Her funeral service will follow at the church. Burial will be in Colbert Memorial Gardens. Reverend Bill Bedsole is officiating.

Mrs. Abernathy is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Abernathy; and her parents, Edward and Florence Langley.

She is survived by her daughters, Gene Ann Blankinship (Karl) and Mary Jane Dillenberger (Kelley); grandchildren, Sarah Ann Ricketts (Jason), 2nd Lt. K. Taylor Dillenberger II, USMC "the favorite", Mary Beth Blankinship, Langley Dillenberger and Madison Dillenberger; great-grandchildren, Anna Coleman, Lilli Pace, Jane Ellis, and Sanyaa Achsah Ricketts.

Mrs. Abernathy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sheffield for 72 years. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Janice was an active member of the Emmaus Community.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Hudson, Danny Reese, Charlie Grimmitt Sr., Charlie Grimmitt, Ged and Justin Grimmitt.

Colbert Memorial Chapel, Tusumbia, is directing.
