Bertha Teal, 97, former Webster City resident, died Monday at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge. Private Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Graceland Cemetery with Rev. Richard Nelson officiating.
Bertha Ellen Teal, daughter John and Fannie Garrett Teal, was born May 28, 1888 at Mount Tabor, Ill. She attended Midland City, Ill. elementary school and the academy at Waynesville, Ill. In 1905, the family moved to Webster City where she graduated from high school in 1909. Miss Teal received a Hamilton County teaching certificate and taught in the rural schools near Jewell for three years. In 1916, she graduated from the University of Des Moines with a bachelor of arts degree. She taught liberal arts and dramatics at Webster City High School from 1917 to 1943.
For many summers she took graduate work at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Miss Teal taught in Ankeny and Madrid before retiring. In 1963, she moved to Minneapolis, and then moved to Friendship Haven in 1966.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, among them are John, Frank, Ralph and William Stearns all of Webster City.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters and her parents.
Miss Teal was a member of First Baptist Church and the Quill Club.
