Funeral Service Held For Mrs. John P. Orton

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the West Ward chapel for Sarah Ann Frith Orton, 68, wife of John P. orton and respected lady of this community who died at her home early Saturday evening. Death came after a long period of ill health caused by asthma which finally developed into pneumonia.

The services were under the direction of Arnold Y. Stevens of the West Ward bishopric and commenced with the combined choirs of both wards singing "Sometime We'll Understand", directed by Silas Topham and accompanied by Irene Marsden. The opening prayer was offered by Joseph Stevens following which Mary Dalton and Blanche Hammond sang a duet, "Hold Thou My Hand."

Speakers were Silas J. Ward, H.L. Adams and Simon A. Matheson. Other musical numbers were a quartet "O My Father" by a group from Cedar City, directed by I.E. Riddle, president of the Parowan Stake temple mission of which Mr. Orton is a member; and the closing song "Abide With Me" by the choir. Other members of the quartet were Elda Manning, Helen Goodlife, and John Bowen. The closing prayer was offered by M.M. Decker and the grave was dedicated by Mrs. Orton's brother in law, George Alexander of Spanish Fork.

Pallbearers were a brother George Frith of Los Angeles, four nephews,, Walt, Ronald, Edward and George Rowley, and John James of Spanish Fork.

The deceased was born in Hucknall Folkard Nottinghamshire, England on February 28, 1870, a daughter of George and Charlotte Hutchinson Frith. She was married to John P. Orton in 1889 and they came to this country in 1895 and settled in this city where they have resided ever since. She joined the Mormon church while she lived in England and has been active in the work ever since.

She is survived by her husband and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Charlotta Alexander of Spanish Fork, George Frith of Los Angeles, John Frith and Minnie S. Rowley of Parowan, Mary Done, and Ellen Noble of Nott. England.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*
Sarah (Frith) Orton helped raise her nephew Daniel "Dan" Lagerald Barney. Sarah loved her nephew Daniel as if he were her own son. Sarah never had any children so her nephew Daniel was the closest thing she had to having a child. Daniel was known to use his aunt Sarah's married name ORTON while he was living with Sarah and her husband. Unfortunately, the name Orton appears on a few of his family records. .. It's as well quite confusing as he was always a BARNEY by birth and by blood.
