Son of Wilbur Daniel and Jane McKee Gilbert Hopkins. Wilbur married (1) Dorothy Mae Townsend on January 23, 1926, and (2) Celia Vida Lee in 1977.

MYRTLE BEACH- Wilbert D. Hopkins Jr. 94, a resident of the Assisted Living Center at Myrtle Beach Manor and formerly of Deerfield in Surfside Beach, died Saturday, February 24, 2001, after an illness.

He was born May 4, 1906, in South Orange, NJ, a son of the late Wilbert D. Hopkins Sr. and Jane McKee Gilbert. He was raised by his grandfather and grandmother in Bayport, Long Island, from the age of seven.

He completed the necessary courses and was approved and certified as a public school teacher by the University of the State of New York. He taught in the Albany, NY, public school system for 14 years and then became the assistant director of a U.S. government-sponsored Trade and Technical School in Troy, NY. After he retired from teaching, he continued his education and finished first on a statewide exam for senior specification writer in the New York State Architect's Office, where he finished his working career.

In 1976, he left the Albany, NY, area and moved to Myrtle Beach with his first wife, Dorothy Mae Townsend, who predeceased him in 1976. They had been married for 50 years. In 1977, he married Celia Lee Hardwick of Conway, widow of Oscar Hardwick. In 1978, they built a home in Deerfield in Surfside Beach and became members of Deertrack Country Club. His second wife, Celia, died in April 2000.

Survivors include a son, Malcolm T. Hopkins of Asheville, NC; 2 granddaughters; 4 great-grandchildren; and 3 step-children.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Southeastern Memorial Gardens in North Myrtle Beach. McMillan-Small Funeral Home of Myrtle Beach is in charge.
