Henry Alexander Skeggs, of RFD #1, Rockbridge County, Virginia passed away at 11:30 AM, at Jackson Memorial Hospital, on Thursday, 04 October 1951, after a lengthy battle with cardiac problems. He was 71.
Mr. Skeggs was born on Saturday, 21 August 1880, to William E Skeggs and Celia Ellen Bean Skeggs, in Somerville, Morgan County, Alabama. He was the first of six children born to this union.
He was united in marriage to Helen Stahlman Toney on Wednesday, 30 April 1902, in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee by minister James Dobson Barbee (born Alabama, lived in Nashville 1870-death). Mrs. Skeggs preceded Henry in death on Wednesday, 21 September 1949. They were married 47 years. To their union were born two children: daughter Helen Claiborne Skeggs and daughter Marion Bean Skeggs.
Mr. Skeggs was a native of Somerville, Morgan County, Alabama. He was a graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University), of Auburn, Lee County, Alabama. He also attended Fall's Business college and was a member of West End Methodist church. In the 1910 and 1920 US census' he and wife Helen were in the household of her father, Marcus Breckenridge Toney in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. The elder Mr. Toney died in 1929, and Henry and Helen moved to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was a retired tobacco dealer.
Mr. Skeggs was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, daughter Helen Claiborne Skeggs, sister Olive Hunt Skeggs, brother Frank Bean Skeggs, and brother William Erskine Skeggs.
He is survived by daughter Marion Bean Skeggs McAuliffe and husband Donovan, brother John Hunt Skeggs, and sister Ella Bean Skeggs.
Funeral services were conducted at gravesite at 11:00 AM on Monday, 08 October 1951, with Dr. James W. Henley officiating.
Interment occurred at Mount Olivet Cemetery of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.
Funeral services were entrusted to the care of Harrison Funeral Homes of 714 South Main Street, Lexington, Virginia.
