Melvin Romine Phillips 83, entered into eternal life on October 2, 2004, 7:52 a.m., at the Health Center of Towne House Retirement Community, Fort Wayne, IN, after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death seven weeks ago, August 13, by his beloved wife, Carolyn Beckner Phillips. Married in Parkersburg, WV, 1944, the couple had just reached their 60th wedding anniversary on August 12, surrounded by their loving family. Rev. and Mrs. Phillips had served together as co-chaplains at The Towne House Retirement Community for fourteen years until 2003. Mr. Phillips is survived by his four children: Ann (John) Hershman of Lebanon, IN, a teacher with the Indianapolis Public Schools; Rev. Ruth E. Phillips, associate pastor, Plymouth Congregational Church United Church of Christ, Fort Wayne; Ralph (Margarete) Phillips, Director of Analyst Relations, Siemens AG, Munich, Germany; and Rev. Beth (Rev. William) Hennessy, pastoral visitor, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Bay City, MI; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Corliss and Julia (Romine) Phillips, and a brother. He is also survived by two brothers; and two sisters. Rev. Phillips came to Fort Wayne in 1973 when he accepted the position of Executive Minister, Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and Allen County. During his 15 years tenure, he gave leadership to develop and support the Food Bank System. He served in a number of community leadership roles, including the East Wayne Street Center and Mental Health Association of Allen County. Mr. Phillips held a lifelong commitment to ecumenical, interfaith, interracial understanding and cooperation, as well as civil rights, social justice and peace concerns. At one time he served as president of the Indiana Council of Churches. He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor O'Bannon in 2000. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Downtown Rotary Club. He received his Master of Divinity degree at Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Rochester, NY in 1946. An ordained American Baptist minister, he was pastor of First Baptist Church, Jamestown, NY prior to moving to Fort Wayne. He also served First Baptist Church in Anderson, 1957 to 1967; and Shelbyville, 1950 to 1957. A native of West Virginia, Mr. Phillips graduated Alderson-Broaddus College, Philippi, WV and served as pastor at First Baptist Church, Kingwood, WV. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be Thursday, October 7 at 11 a.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church of Fort Wayne, 501 West Berry St. A reception will follow. Visitation will also be at Plymouth Church on Wednesday, October 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Preferred memorials may be made to Associated Churches Food Bank, 602 E. Wayne St., Fort Wayne, IN, 46803. East Wayne Street Center, 801 E. Wayne St., Fort Wayne, IN, 46803; or Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, 4800 Wedgewood Drive, Charlotte, NC 28210.
