On September 30th 1928, he was on duty patrolling his beat in Balboa Park when he suffered a heart attack. The condition was aggravated due to the fact he was also suffering pneumonia. A young boy passing through the park found Patrolman Lusk slumped over the wheel of his patrol car near the Cabrillo Bridge.
Patrolman Lusk was rushed to Mercy Hospital where, surprisingly for his condition, he walked in unassisted and joked with hospital staff. Several hours later, his condition took a turn for the worse and he died.
A sixteen veteran of the department, Patrolman Lusk was 49-years-old and married with two children at the time of his death.
A little more than one-year prior, Patrolman Lusk had served as a pallbearer at the funeral of his close friend, Detective Charles Harris.
