Schaefer, Reuben J.

Reuben Joseph Schaefer, formerly of Hilbert, age 96, went peacefully to his eternal rest on Friday September 6, 2013 at Maple Lane Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shawano. He was born on the homestead farm in rural Hilbert on August 23, 1917, the youngest of 4 sons born to the late Charles and Anna (Sommers) Schaefer. Reuben graduated from Brillion High School in 1935. He engaged in farming on the homestead property and lived there almost all of his life until his stroke in the summer of 2007. In addition to farming, Reuben also worked for the town of Brillion, Brillion Iron Works, White Clover Dairy in the Town of Holland, Wispride Cheese in Hilbert, and Ariens Company in Brillion, from which he retired in 1982. Reuben married Erna Elsie Reinke on November 23, 1943. Except for one short year, they lived on the family farm, wanting their children to be brought up in the country. In his later years, Reuben enjoyed gardening, playing cards, attending church functions and spending time with family, friends, and his faithful dog, Duke. He was a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hilbert and enjoyed membership in the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Knights, Mens Club and Eagles Club. He will be remembered for his quick wit and ready comeback for almost any situation. He also became quite accomplished in the kitchen, sending family members home with homemade cookies and pies (especially apple), as well as produce from his garden, which for many years, was his pride and joy.

Reuben is survived by his daughters: Judith (Wayne) Dunbar, Green Bay; Marjorie (Gene) Goldschmidt, Appleton; Joyce (Richard) Holtz, Little Chute; Carol (Harvey) Boeder, Green Bay; and Doris Jean (Charles) Strohfeldt, Whitelaw; grandchildren: Craig and Reed Dunbar, Collin (Melissa) and Cory (Karissa) Goldschmidt, Rick (Clysta) and Jason (Carissa) Holtz, Edward (Christina) and Aaron Boeder, Shannon and Eric (Jennifer) Strohfeldt; great grandsons: Graham Goldschmidt, Lars, Olin and Vaughn Holtz and Emerson Boeder; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mabel (Lester) Oakley, Jeannette (Donald) Stellbrink, Mary Reinke and Gwen Reinke. He is further survived by other relatives, friends, and the family of special friend, the late Evelyn Nehring.

In addition to his parents, Reuben was preceded in death by his wife Erna and their daughter Doris Joan. His death also marks the end of his immediate generation with his brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter (Grace), Sylverius (Hilaria) and William (Nel) Schaefer, all waiting to welcome him into heaven. Members of Erna's family also preceded him in death: Martha Riemer, Ruth Henehan Vrankovic, Dorothy (Roland) Schmeiser, Edward (Joan), Darold (Marcella), Clifford (Jean), Roy, Esther, Stella, Harry Oscar, Leo and William Reinke Jr.; and special friend Evelyn Nehring.

Visitation will be held Tuesday September 10, 2013 at ST. MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS CATHOLIC CHURCH (108 S. 6th St. Hilbert) beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Michael Betley will officiate. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery. To sign the guest book, please visit oconnellfh.com.

The family wishes a very special thank you to the staff in the Maple View unit at Maple Lane Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shawano, Parkside Care Center in Little Chute and Theda Care at Home Hospice for the many acts of kindness extended to dad during his long illness.
