Robert L. Franz, age 84, of 3322 S. 10th St., Manitowoc, died on Monday morning, April 7, 2008, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center.
Robert was born on April 2, 1924, in Manitowoc, son of the late Robert H. and Elsie (Luedtke) Franz. He attended schools in Manitowoc and graduated with the class of 1942, from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was proficient in helping to perfect the workings of the Norden bombsight. He married the former Donna Klingholz on Dec. 6, 1952, in Manitowoc. Robert worked as purchasing manager at Mirro Aluminum until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and an Associate member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 731.
Survivors include his wife: Donna Franz, Manitowoc; four children: Barbara and John Cook, Pickerel; Kent and Cheryl Franz, Middleton; Jeani Herrmann, Manitowoc; and Steven and Amy Franz, Manitowoc; eight grandchildren: Brennan and Brady Cook, Pickerel; Skylar and Carissa Franz, Middleton; Samantha and Olivia Herrmann, Manitowoc; and Vaughn and Wyatt Franz, Manitowoc; two sisters-in-law: Patricia Sampe, Lena; and Kay Rodriguez, Colorado Springs, Colo.; one brother-in-law: Wilbur Miller, Westcliffe, Colo.; and his wonderful companions: Bammer and Max. Other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Marilyn Miller; and an infant brother.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2008, at St. James Episcopal Church, N. Eighth and State streets, Manitowoc. The Rev. Kristine Henning will officiate. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 731 at Evergreen Cemetery will accord private military graveside services.
Relatives and friends may call at St. James Episcopal Church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m.
The Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the Franz family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lakeshore Humane Society.
