He was the son of John M. Howe and Frances Jane Davis Howe. He married Martha Elizabeth Quinn. On April 13, 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate Army, 5th Regiment SC Infantry, Co, B, as a private. He enlisted at the York District SC by Capt. Andrew Jackson, for a period of 12 months. He was 20 years old. He later serves with the Palmetto Regt. Sharp Shooters, Co. G, Jenkins Regiment, as a private. On April 9, 1865, he appears on the roll of parolees of the Army of Northern Virginia, at Appomattox Court House VA.
