Virgil's last known occupation was that of a clerk at a gas office. He died aged 68 and was buried on October 24th 1885 at Monument Cemetery according to Pennsylvania, Philadelphia City Death Certificates, 1803-1915. Virgil was predeceased by his wife in 1879. Her funeral took place from their residence at 1502 Fairmount Avenue.

A university acquired the cemetery where Virgil was originally buried. Families claimed about 8,000 of the 28,000 bodies buried there. The remains of Virgil were removed with the remaining 20,000 to an unmarked grave at Lawnview. Many original gravestones from Monument Cemetery were used as rubble under the Betsy Ross Bridge connecting Philadelphia and Pennsauken. Many of the gravestones have been found in the Delaware River.
