By daughter Angela:

Mother has always said "I am not handicapped by my condition. I am physically challenged and differently able."

Both my parents - "Nothing ever stopped us. There was nothing beyond determination."

Legacy Foundation:

I have created the '90-pound heavyweight Janet Barnes Legacy Foundation' to share the unstoppable spirit and life of Janet Barnes, Guinness World Records longest living quadriplegic (incomplete) and her constant quest for freedom following a horrible accident that literally broke nearly every bone in her body. The fight for life demonstrated to doctors, caregivers and hospital administrators that the right to live is precious and self determined.

The foundation will create, distribute and introduce in whatever method works and to a varied audience the candid and inspiring words, thoughts and actions of a woman who was born with a broken neck and 100% believes that there is nothing beyond determination. One who said "I am not handicapped by my condition. I am physically challenged and differently able."

It will also do whatever is possible to change the current practices and procedures that do not support this philosophy and will try to illustrate methods and ways to do a better job in the health related profession, including but not limited to illustrating the difference
we have in 'policy' manuals and the 'living policy' which is the actions that are actually happening on a day-to-day basis. The hope is that not only will the idea of life being a gift be embraced , but that medical costs will be reduced with the possible/planned research and will help 'show the cobwebs' and find help in creating appropriate continuing education or support programs to the industry that also includes a very large majority of low paid and minimally educated CNA's and burned out professionals.

Whatever it takes to make sense out of nonsense loss of life is the focus. Whatever it takes to instill and inspire others to reach a little farther and do a little more is at the heart of the Foundation.

Mother inspired the creation of two signature books: 90-pound heavyweight JANET BARNES Her Story, Words and Life in Vignette and CELEBRATE the Life and Legacy of Janet Barnes and her unsinkable, unstoppable, fighting spirit available later this year.
