He graduated from Lockport Township High School and from the National College of Chiropractic. He was a chiropractic physician in Marseilles for over 40 years. He was a member of the Starved Rock Yacht Club and Prairie Lakes.
Dr. Cowan is survived by four daughters, Catherine Cowan of LaSalle, Karen Cowan of Ottawa, Rebecca Stangland of Earlville, and Nicole Cowan of Lostant; by four sons, Dr. Gregory (Mary) Cowan of Mt. Sterling, Timothy Cowan and Joseph Cowan, both of Marseilles, and Christopher Cowan of LaSalle; by 12 grandchildren; by a brother, Don (Betty) Cowan of Burlington, Ia; and by two step-brothers Dave (Susan) Cowan of Nashville, Tenn., and Doug (Denise) Cowan of Rochelle. A daughter, Vicotria died previously.
