He was born in 1844, York County SC, the son of Joseph R & Mary C. Howe. He enlisted in the 18th Regt. SC Infantry, Co. G in Wilmington NC, by Col. Wallace, for a period of 3 years as a private. He was 18 years old. He fought in several battles, iincluding Charleston Harbor on Aug to Sept 1863, Bermuda Hundred on May 17 to June 16, 1863, the Petersburg Siege June 1864 to April 1865. He was captured 7/30/1864, at the battle of The Crater, Petersburg VA. He was sent to City Point VA 8/5/1864, where he was sent to Point Look Out MD Union Prison. He was transferred to Elmira 8/12/1864. He died of typhoid fever at the age of 20 years old, grave site # 458 and records show that he had no personal effects at the time of his death.
