The son of Lorraine Minter and Joe Lawrence Barber, he was born January 27, 1948 in Capitan. He graduated from Capitan High School in 1965. He was married to Terri Lucero in 1968 and they had two daughters, Dona and Heather. David worked on the HELITAK crew for the Capitan Forest Services before working for Otero County Electric from 1968-1973. In 1973, he began his career with Southwestern Public Service, moving to Carlsbad, NM and later to Guymon, retiring in 1998. He was united in marriage to Janet Henslee on March 24, 1995 in Roswell, NM. The Barbers made their home at Grand Lake, OK in 1998. David was a sportsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, spending time with his grandsons and fishing with his father-in-law. He had recently found a new passion for drag racing.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Barber of Grand Lake, OK; two daughters, Dona Barber of St. Petersburg, FL and Heather Whiteley of Guymon; a son-in-law, Carl Whiteley of Guymon; mother, Lorraine Minter of Claremore, sister, Doris Lasiter of Claremore; and his grandsons, David and Michael Whitley. He is also survived by his step-children, Barbara Cowan of Tulsa, Jake Henslee of Vinita, OK, Billy Henslee of Borger, TX and Jesse Henslee of Las Vegas, NV. His father, Joe Lawrence Barber and his grandfather, Young Bert Minter, preceded him in death.
Graveside funeral services will be Thursday morning, July 1, 2010, at the Floris Cemetery, Floris, OK at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Mike Whiteley of Jay, OK officiating. Services are under the care of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon. Memorials may be give to the David & Michael Whitely Education Fund or the charity of the donor's choice and may be mailed to Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, P.O. Box 1306, Guymon, OK 73942.
