He served as a medical technician during World War II with the 81st field hospital in the European Theatre of operations and spent most of his tour in Germany. He was honorably discharged from military service on May 1, 1946.

On Jan. 1, 1950, John joined the Two Rivers Fire Department as a firefighter. He earned the rank of lieutenant on Jan. 1, 1972, and retired on Jan. 11, 1981, as an EMT/Lieutenant. He was an avid reader of Western books, liked to fish, hunt and golf, and was an excellent woodcarver. Jack was also an accomplished Coronet player, a long-time scout leader and enjoyed traveling with his wife.
