Alvin H. Ponto was born on November 26, 1906, in Fremont Township, Moody County, South Dakota, the son of Gustav and Clara (Wenzel) Ponto. He died on Tuesday, December 7, 1993, at Brookview Manor at the age of 87 years.

Alvin received his education in rural schools in Fremont Township. After receiving his education he farmed with his parents until his marriage to Veryl Ibach on March 25, 1932, in Madison, South Dakota. After their marriage they farmed in the White and Colman, South Dakota, area until moving to Medary Township, where they continued to farm until retiring in 1974. They continued to live on the farm until moving into Brookings, South Dakota, in 1989.

Alvin was a member of First Lutheran Church. He was a past member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, the B.P.O. of Elks Lodge #1490, and the Lake Campbell Sportsman Club. He especially enjoyed baseball, bowling, hunting, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Veryl Ponto of Brookings; two brothers, F.W. Ponto, and Homer Ponto, both of Brookings; one sister, Ruth (Mrs. Gilbert) Sabin of Apache Junction, Arizona, and several nieces and nephews.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Tillie, Laura, Margaret, Clara, and three brothers, Arthur, Edwin, and Leslie.
