Homer's birth year is disputable. Even though his headstone says 1869, all the records I could find seem to give a different age or a different year for his birth. Homer is not listed on the 1870 census and probably wasn't born yet, but is listed on the 1880 census as being 8 years old and that would explain why he wasn't on the 1870 census - he wasn't born yet. Other censuses don't agree, and it does not make any sense. Census records show - in the 1890 census he was age 26, in the 1900 census he was 26 and says he was born in 1873, in 1910 census he was age 36, in 1930 census he was age 59 and in the 1940 census his age is listed as 70!! (I will continue to research, but my closest guess of his birth year would be 1872, although other family records say possibly 1873.)

Homer married Alice Retha Vickery 6 Feb 1895 in Van Zandt Co., Texas. Alice was born 27 Aug 1877 in Mississippi and died 22 April 1949 in Kirkland, Texas.

Homer's father was George Washington Scates, born 14 Jan 1829 in Tennessee and died 24 Nov 1879 in Myrtle Springs, Texas. George's father was Dr. Joseph William Scates, born 1803 Roane Co., Kentucky and died 28 Oct 1839 in Philadelphia, Loudon Co., Tennessee; and George's mother was Elizabeth "Betsy" Blair (Scates) and she was born 16 Feb 1805 in Kentucky and died 23 Feb 1868 in Canton, Texas.
