Julia was the daughter of James and Sarah Montaudevert, and the widow of Captain James Lawrence, a hero of the War of 1812 who uttered the words, "Don't give up the ship", which became a rallying cry for the U.S. Navy. James died in battle in June 1813, and Julia gave birth to their son, James Montaudevert Lawrence, just a month later. James died when he was just over a year old, leaving Julia to raise her daughter, Mary Neill Lawrence alone. Mary married William Preston Griffin, also a Navy man, but died in childbirth in 1843. Julia then raised her granddaughter Mary Lawrence Griffin, dying when Mary was 22 years old and newly married to William Redmond, Jr. Julia never remarried, remaining true to the memory of Capt. Lawrence all her life. She lived in Newport, Rhode Island in the last years of her life, sharing her home with her sister Mary Cox and her mother, Sarah Montaudevert.

James and Julia Lawrence are my fourth great grandparents (Kathleen).
