Arnold, Helen Susan Harris was born on March 1, 1934 in Augusta, Georgia, the daughter of Jewett and Helen Harris of that city. She attended the Academy of Richmond County and graduated as the first female valedictorian. She attended the Junior College of Augusta then transferred to H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College for Women, an adjunct college of Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Helen graduated from Newcomb College Summa Cum Laude in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. After working in Augusta, Helen was engaged to Harry Arnold, Jr., whom she married in 1958. They established their home in Monroe, Georgia, Mr. Arnold's hometown. After joining the First Baptist Church, Mrs. Arnold established a children's choir, which she led for many years. She was very involved in the church as a member of the Sanctuary choir, handbell group, and as a Sunday School teacher. She was a charter member of the Jubalheirs, a choral group of auditioned singers founded by the Georgia Baptist Convention and enjoyed singing and traveling with the group. She also went on several international church mission trips and was an avid traveler. Mrs. Arnold was active in various groups such as the Junior Service League of Monroe, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Monroe Music Guild, the Athenaeum Club and her bridge club. Mrs. Arnold spent her last three years at Sunrise of Johns Creek, where she was very active and continued to enjoy frequent contact with friends and family. Mrs. Arnold passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 8, 2013. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold were married for 55 years. She is survived by her husband, Harry M. Arnold, Jr. of Monroe, Georgia, three daughters, Susan Borrelli of Atlanta, Georgia, Sarah Goudiss and her husband Robert David Goudiss, also of Atlanta, and Harriet Rosa and her husband Gregory Theodore Rosa of Duluth, Georgia. She also is survived by five grandchildren, Stephen James Marc Borrelli, Catherine Susan Borrelli, Harrison Lee Goudiss, Grace Elizabeth Rosa and Jackson Gregory Rosa. Mrs. Arnold will be missed by family and a host of friends. The visitation was held at Meadows Funeral Home in Monroe on Wednesday, September 11 from 5:30- 8:00 p.m. After a private burial, a celebration of her life will be held at First Baptist Church of Monroe on Thursday, September 12 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of the following Monroe organizations: the First Baptist Church, the William Harris Homestead or the Boys and Girls Club.
