Fred H Eklund was killed Saturday, April 8, 1950, when his pickup truck was struck by a diesel freight train at a grade crossing near his home in West Plains, Missouri. Before he moved to West Plains four years prior, Mr. Eklund had been employed by Barber-Colman company in Rockford, Illinois, for many years and had operated a filling station at Rural and Prospect streets. Mr. Eklund was born Sept. 14, 1898, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. An overseas veteran of WWI, he received his training at Camp Grant and during that time met the former Bessie Cronk, whom he married September 18, 1921, in Central Christian church in Rockford, IL. In 1840 he purchased a farm five miles from West Plains, MO. He was a member of the Rockford Masonic Lodge in Rockford, IL.
