Injured with a blank cartridge on July 4, 1899, and days later became terribly ill with tetanus. He spent several days in Bayonne Hospital before succumbing to the affliction on July 13, 1899. Buried on 15 July 1899. His last moment of enjoyment may have been on July 7 when he felt well enough to take a steamship on the Long Island Sound. He was just 13 years old.
Many other boys died of tetanus after that 4th of July due to exploding toy pistols and fireworks accidents. The cases were widely reported in the NY/NJ press.
