Ben married Addie Tyler on July 8, 1898 in San Bernardino County California. They did not have children of their own, but raised 2 children in their home.
Ben came to California as early as 1884, evidenced by land records and voter registration records. The records indicate that he may have traveled to California with his brother Elmer E. Merriss who settled in Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA and remained there until his death in 1937. Shortly after his marriage to Addie, Ben went to Alaska for about three years, according to his obituary. It was reported in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on June 8 1900 that the ship "Victoria" sailed for Nome Alaska with 640 passengers, which included one Jno. B. Merriss.
