James Edwin Carpenter (1952 - 2013)

MOUNT AIRY, Ga. - James "Jim" Edwin Carpenter, 61, formerly of Cuba, N.Y., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (Aug. 14, 2013) at his home in Mount Airy.

Jim was born Aug. 6, 1952, in Cuba, N.Y., a son of Maurice and Virginia M. Carpenter. He was married May 16, 1992, to Lorraine "Lori" Smielecki, who predeceased him Sept. 30, 2011.

Jim graduated from Cuba Central School in 1971. He spent several years working for Market Basket and then Hysol until he retired due to health reasons.

He moved to Mount Airy in 2006.

Jim coached peewee football and Little League baseball in Cuba and was the president of Friendship (N.Y.) Little League. He attended Black Creek (N.Y.) Church and was a member of the Black Creek Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, watching Andy Griffith and following the Atlanta Braves. He loved spending time with his family, his children and his grandchildren. Jim was a beloved son, brother, cousin, nephew, uncle, daddy, grandpa and more.

Surviving Jim are his mother, Virginia Carpenter of Jacksonville, Ala.; his brother, Chris (Beth) Carpenter of Beverly Hills, Fla.; two sisters, Amy (David) Smith of Jacksonville and Cathy (Chuck Gaylor) Carpenter of Olean, N.Y.; three daughters, Kim (John) Colyer of Mount Airy, Amanda (Greg) Layman of Belfast, N.Y., and Corrie Carpenter of Black Creek; two sons, James D. (Leondra) Carpenter of Athens, Ga., and Timothy Carpenter of Mount Airy.

Along with his wife, Lori, Jim was predeceased by his father, Maurice Carpenter; his sister, Diane Carpenter; and his brother, Martin Carpenter.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday (Aug. 27, 2013) in Jacksonville, with a burial following at a later date at Black Creek Cemetery in Black Creek.
