Lawrence was born Feb. 15, 1933, and spent most of his adult life in West Dunbar. He was a retired heavy equipment operator, having worked for Vecellio & Grogan for over 25 years. He was also a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was married to Sylvia for 52 years and stated countless times that she was “the love of his life.” Mr. Bess loved the outdoors while fishing, hunting, trapping, gardening and especially ginsenging. He attended West Dunbar Community Church. He also proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Gaynor Bess; brother, George N. Bess; sister, Barbara Porter; daughter-in-law, Judy Bess; and mother-in-law, Dessie Wass.
In addition to his wife, Lawrence is survived by his son, Richard N. Bess of Kenova and his fiancée, Winnie Snoddy; daughter, Phyllis A. Conrad of St. Albans; sister, Emma Ruth Childers of Ona; and his precious granddaughter, Sylvia Leeann Conrad.
He will be fondly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Doyle Young officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
