Joan was probably born in or near Benenden, Kent, England, about 1480. Neither the particulars of her birth nor her family name are known. About 1503, she married Richard Bigge, probably in Benenden. They lived in Cranbrook, Kent and were the parents of at least 13 children between them, but it is possible that either one or both of them was married before. Richard was a wealthy cloth merchant in Cranbrook. Richard died in 1533. Joan moved back to Benenden and died about 1550, in Benenden. Joan was buried in the churchyard of St. George Church in Benenden, as requested in her will.
