In Memory of Charles Buffington
Charles Buffington, the subject of this sketch, was born on the 4th day of August, 1825 and departed this life on the 21st day of July, 1896. Had he lived to the 4th of this month, he would have been 71 years of age. He enlisted as a private in Co. I, 83d Regt. Ind. Vol. Infantry, on the 8th day of September, 1862, and was honorably discharged on the first day of June, 1865. He participated in many of the great battles of the war, and was on the first gunboat that ran the blockade at Vicks burg, and he was under Gen. Sherman in his celebrated march from Atlanta to the sea. he was highly respected by all who enjoyed his acquaintance, and stood high in the community where he resided. He lived on a farm near Natchez, this county. He leaves a widow and three children to mourn his loss. He was a devoted member of the M.D. Manson Post, and his comrades of the Post extend the bereaved family of the deceased their condolence and sympathy in this hour of trial.
Our beloved comrade was a patriot. He freely gave his service to his country and died of disease contracted in the army. Let us all emulate his virtues and forget his faults.
