Flute manufacturer. The son of Thomas Preston and Ella Josephine (Pfeiffer) Artley, he came to the musical instrument manufacturing industry as a young adult. He was mounting pads on woodwinds in 1920, and by 1930 he was a pattern-maker for Conn. In 1934 he was a repairman for Selmer, and in 1936 he was working as an assembler for Buescher. In 1938 he had returned to Selmer, and was working as an assembler. Published accounts indicate that he founded his company as early as 1939, but it wasn't until 1948 that his Artley Manufacturing Company was fully operational. In 1953 his company was known as D. and J. Artley, Inc. Artley produced student and intermediate flutes and piccolos. Upon his death, Richard W. Bosse became president and general manager, and changed the company's name to Artley, Inc. In 1969 the company was sold to Conn who chose to continue the Artley trademark.
