Civil War Veteran. Enlisted in the U. S. Navy on October 13, 1862, for 1 year, as Second Class Fireman and served aboard the U.S.S. Ohio and the U.S.S. Ossipee during the war. He was discharged on February 14, 1863, from receiving ship at Washington, D.C.

OBITUARY.

Levi W. Adams.

Mr. Levi W. Adams, one of Portsmouth's best citizens, died at his home at No. 5 South street, on Tuesday evening, after an illness of several months of valvular disease of the heart. Although he was unable to be at work he was not obliged to take to his bed until about four weeks ago, from which time he began to gradually grow weaker until the end.

He leaves a wife;
one son, Judge Edward H. Adams;
four daughters,
Mrs. George W. Shapleigh, of Dover,
Mrs. Samuel H. Chauncey of Melrose, Mass.,
Misses Fannie D. and L. Mabel of this city;
and one brother, Josiah F. Adams,
and one sister, Mrs. William B. Randall, of this city.

He was a member of St. John's lodge of Masons; United Order of the Golden Cross; and was chaplain of the Kearsarge Naval Veterans.

Mr. Adams was born in the city, on Gates street, in 1834(?), but in early life he took up residence in Eliot, Me., where he lived until about seven years ago, when he again removed to this city, where he has endeared himself to all with whom he has come in contact. He embodied all that was true, good and noble, and the world is a loser by his taking away.
