While in Richmond he was a musician in the Public Guard Band. It was reported in his Obituary that he played at the hanging of John Brown, the Abolitionist, in 1859 at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
He and his second wife Caroline had the following children: Katharina (Adolph Trost), Minnie (Jacob Galster), Caroline (Carl Trautman), Mary (Marie) (William H. Haberle & George Washington Kavanaugh), Amelia (Albert E. Matthews) and Andrew John Miller Jr (Agnes Frances Burns).
