Samuel is the son of Thomas Smith (1740-1840) and Sarah Harvey (1785-).

Samuel died after crossing Salt Creek near Kearney Nebraska. His body was wrapped in a blanket and he was buried along side the trail.

June 28th - "Brother Samuel Smith died of cholera at 8 o'clock at night aged 43 years. Brother Badlam and myself laid him out in his robes. Laid him on the ground in his tent. But we had just got it done until a tremendous thunder storm over took us. Blew the tent down. We had to cover over the corpse and let it lie until morning."
June 29th - "We buried Brother Smith this morning and continued our journey."

Children - Sarah Ann Smith, Joseph Smith, Emma Smith, Joseph Samuel Smith, Sarah Ann Smith, Joseph Samuel Smith, Abraham Owen Smith, Martisha Rosalia Smith. Marthisha Rosalia was born one week after Samuel's death in a wagon while the family continued the trek to Utah.
