John Scott Withers passed away Sunday, May 30, 2010, in Waco after a short illness. Services are pending in Buckhannon, WV.
John was born January 25, 1923 in Buckhannon, West Virginia. He attended the Kentucky Military Institute and later received a BS in Chemical Engineering from West Virginia University. He served as a naval officer in WWII having command of a ship in the South Pacific. Following his military service, John was in the aerospace industry for over 20 years working primarily for North American Aviation.
The family moved to Waco in 1960 where John worked for North American Aviation's Rocketdyne division in McGregor. He was last employed by the Texas State Technical Institute in Waco, retiring in 1992.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Gladys B. Withers of Buckhannon, WV; and his sister, Virginia Crawford of Melbourne, Fla.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jan Withers of Waco; sons, Dr. John S. Withers and wife, Ann, of Anchorage, AK; Nathan H. Withers of Woodway, TX; grandchildren, Autumn L. Withers of Los Angeles, CA; Nathaniel S. and Hannah R. Withers of Ft. Worth, TX.
