Harry was born on September 11, 1926 in Galesburg, Illinois to Ora Vernon and Eugenia Buelah Ditmars Thurman. He married Phyllis Lee Gorke on September 4, 1948 in Metropolis, Illinois. She preceded him in death on March 21, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Warren Thurman and one sister, Geraldine Emory Webb. He is survived by one sister, Nellie Yarde of Thornton, Colorado; two daughters, Nancy (Michael) Wilson of Godfrey, Illinois and Jayne (Larry) Jones of Macomb, Illinois; 4 grandsons, 2 granddaughters; 3 great-grandsons and 3 great-granddaughters.
A Navy veteran, he served 3 years (1944-1947) during WWII aboard the USS Monrova APA-31, attaining the rank of Signalman Third Class. He later served in the Korean War (1951-1952) where he was assigned to the USS Hopewell DD-681, attaining the rank of Quartermaster Third Class.
Mr. Thurman worked for Hummel Lumber Company in Bushnell for many years, retiring in 1988.
There will be no services or visitation. Cremation has been accorded. Private burial of Harry and Phyllis' ashes will be held at a later date in the Bushnell Cemetery.
