Emma B. Swap was born in Iowa to Franklin and Mary (Mitchell) Swap, both natives of New York. The family moved to Boonville, Missouri after the Civil War and in 1880 she was a school teacher. By 1900, she was married and had three children: Merle, Marie and Willliam. She died in Boonville on May 5, 1930 of apoplexy. Her husband, Charles Edward "Ed" Short, survived her.
