Mr. Bufkin died at Baptist Hospital East, Louisville.

He served The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as treasurer in from 1948 to 1974, serving under presidents Ellis Fuller and Duke McCall. He was a graduate of the old Western School of Business and was a Certified Public Accountant. He was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church in Louisville.

"Mr. Bufkin loved the seminary," T.J. McGlothlin, the assistant treasurer under Bufkin, said. "He was a dedicated Christian man." Mr. McGlothlin, who became the seminary's treasurer in 1981, said Mr. Bufkin was known for his work ethic.

"He had a great attitude," Mr. McGlothlin said. "He was a hard worker. Back then the administrative staff was equivalent to about 12 people. It was 60, 70, 80-hour weeks. There was no such thing as a 35-hour week. He was a very accomplished man."

In 1979, Southern Seminary named a building after Mr. Bufkin at the Seminary Village housing complex in honor of his service.

He celebrated his 70th wedding anniversary with his wife, Frances Green Bufkin, in 2000, just months before her death.

At his death, he was survived by his daughter, Nancy Soloski and her husband Ed of Dayton, Ohio.
