OLDEST EX-CAPTAIN OF FLOYD RIFLES EXPIRES W. J. F. Ross, Aged 82, Dies At Waxahachie, Tex. Relatives in Macon have received copied of the Waxahachie Daily Light, of Waxahachie, Texas, in which is an account of the death of Capt. W. J. F. Ross, a native of Macon, and up to the time of his death the oldest living ex-captain of the Floyd Rifles military company. Capt. John L. Hardeman now holds that distinction. Captain Ross died last Sunday at Waxahachie after an illness of only one day. He sustained a stroke of paralysis on Saturday and died twenty-four hours later. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Emily Raoul, of Arkansas; Miss Kate Ross; two sons, Floyd and Castleberry Ross, of Ford City, Texas. Captain Ross was a first cousin of the late William Henry Ross of Macon, and Edgar Ross, who resides in Macon at this time. 82 Years of Age. Born in Macon eighty-two years ago, Captain Ross enlisted in the Floyd Rifles on April 19, 1861, as a private. Later he was promoted to sergeant major, in 1862 was promoted to second lieutenant, and in 1863 was elected captain, which commission he held through several important engagements of the Civil war. At the battle of Gettysburg, Captain Ross was wounded and taken prisoner. He was imprisoned at Baltimore, Md., but inter exchanged and resumed service for the Confederacy. He continued in active service until the close of the war when he was in the surrender at Appomattox. After the war Captain Ross followed many other immigrants to Texas, and was one of the pioneers of Waxahachie. He became one of the leading citizens of that city, was tax assessor of Ellis county for many years, and was later mayor of Waxahachie. He also had extensive business interest there.
