While Sumner's birth record doesn't show who his father was, the following can be found on page 194 in the Homes of Sutton section of the History of the Town of Sutton, MA from 1704 to 1876 by Rev. William A. Benedict, A.M. and Rev. Hiram A. Tracy:
"Gen Davis gave the farm to his son Sumner Barton, when he was twenty-one years of age."
Sumner died on the farm the following year.
Another illegitimate son of Hannah and Gen. Davis and brother of Sumner was Ira Moore Barton.
