Maude E. Anders was the daughter of Fremont Anders and Elizabeth Baylor. She was born in Iowa and was living in Exira when she married Anton Spoo, son of Antonius Spoo and Gertrude Reuthen, on 21 December 1898, Audubon County, Iowa. This was the first marriage for both of them.
At the time of their marriage, Anton was working for carpenter Joseph Smith of Brayton, Iowa. Two years later, he was working as a salesman and living in Walnut, Pottowatamie County, Iowa.
Anton and "Doll" had two children, George D. Spoo and Gertie P. Spoo. [Gertie most likely was named after Anton's mother, Gertrude Reuthen, who died when Anton was a baby in Germany]. Anton and Doll were married 10 years 4 months and 11 days when Anton died from tuberculosis, a/k/a consumption on 1 May 1909. Then Maude and her children moved back to Exira to be near kin.
